Thank you to all who made the 1st ever STELLAR NIGHT OUT so amazing! We will be announcing our next show soon!

Post Event Press Release:

Stellar Sounds from Stockholm
Swedish DJ Axwell raises the party to fever pitch in his first ever visit to Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, 12 January 2010 – Heavenly tunes, outstanding remixes and a smashing night out for all. At Axwell’s debut deck performance in Malaysia last Friday on 8 January at KL Live, it was certainly an exceptional night that exceeded expectations.

When Stellar Entertainment first announced A Stellar Night Out With Axwell Live In Malaysia, many were curious to see how this Swedish house music extraordinaire would match up. Not that they had anything to worry about; after all, Axwell is currently billed as the world’s #14 DJ (via DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs Poll) and is most favourably known for his alliance with fellow Swedes Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello as the venerable Swedish House Mafia. True enough, any doubts about whether Axwell could muster up the perfect party playlist vanished as soon as the DJ stepped onto the expansive stage and presided on the decks.

By then, a good throng of partygoers–comprised of seasoned clubbers, friends of Stellar Entertainment and a group of avid supporters from Sweden–had already found their comfort zone on the dance floor as they waited for the deck star to work his magic. Preceding Axwell’s DJ set were the trinity of Malaysia’s own inexhaustible DJs Blink, Suresh Nelson and Gabriel. Already well-known for his explosive sets as one-half of LapSap, and having travelled extensively in the last year playing gigs around Asia, the UK and Europe, Blink certainly made things look effortless as he pushed up his power house electro to early comers who wanted to make sure they secured the best spot in the room.

Suresh Nelson was up next, and was a rather refreshing sight to see (and sound to hear). A seasoned DJ-producer for over a decade, Nelson’s famed Dialogue 7 sessions on Malaysia’s #1 radio station hitz.fm–which was the official radio station for A Stellar Night Out With Axwell Live In Malaysia–have gained a steady fan following for their hypnotic amalgam of minimal techno and micro house sounds. And on this Friday night warming up for Axwell, Nelson showed just how good he could sound live, and why he’s still an in-demand DJ in Europe and–more recently–Indonesia.

As midnight approached, the huge space at KL Live filled up with party people and anticipation for Axwell resonated all around. At this time, Gabriel had already taken over the decks as the final opener, and he delivered an infectiously funky house set that was just the right bait to lure the crowd onto the dance floor. By then, the upstairs VIP deck was already packed and buzzing with talk, movement and the quaffing of Skyy Vodka cocktails. But the real action was to be had on the dance floor, and as 1am approached, the DJ everyone was curious to see took his place on the decks, helped along nicely by a big welcome from hitz.fm presenter and Pop Shuvit frontman Moots!

Axwell delivered a ragingly bullish, missile-charged set

And then, almost a god-like figure against the beautiful backdrop of lights illuminating the wall behind him, Axwell stepped up to the plate and delivered a ragingly bullish, missile-charged set. There was none of that haughty, lifeless DJing some deck spinners are guilty of; Axwell was full of life, and his body moved in response to every beat that was dropped the whole night. And boy, did he know his beats. Not one to linger on a track and let any sign of restlessness creep up on clubbers, the first-rate remix guru showed everyone why he’s been a highly desirable asset to the music biz as he dropped rework after rework of chart hits, house music favourites and indie classics laced with his own productions. In fact, nothing was left to its original form as he tweaked and turned the knobs, fooled around with the faders and basically gave everyone in the room a splendid, musically climaxing good time.

“Trainspotters” lost count of the bevy of recognisable tracks the Swede dropped, but had as much fun pointing them out as they did dancing to them. Axwell was definitely a remixer for the people. There were the ubiquitous dance floor anthems of today (Major Lazer’s ‘Pon De Floor’, La Roux’s ‘In For The Kill’ and ‘Bulletproof’), some classics that shook up the routine (Fatboy Slim’s ‘Star 69’, Who Da Funk’s ‘Shiny Disco Balls’, Eurythmics’ ‘Sweet Dreams’), heady electro pop bangers (MGMT’s ‘Kids’, Empire Of The Sun’s ‘Walking On A Dream’) and some clap-happy indie thrown in for good measure (The Temper Trap’s ‘Love Lost’, Blur’s ‘Song 2’). “The DJ is such a c*ckteaser!” exclaimed Angie Teoh, a local events organiser. “He gets the crowd pumped up with inklings of the Black Eyed Peas’ ‘I Got A Feeling’ and Daft Punk’s ‘Around The World’, and you want to hear more of them but then you realise he’s just teasing you!” This was indeed Axwell’s signature: tossing in a bite-sized teaser at the beginning of a track, getting everybody’s expectations high for the initial tune and then dropping something completely different. Even his own productions ‘Watch The Sunrise’ and ‘Tell Me Why’–a remake of Bronski Beat’s ‘Smalltown Boy’ with Steve Angello as Supermode–had their own unique variations.

But make no mistake, Axwell’s prowess as a first-class remixer was truly evident tonight. Seasoned clubbers could admit to rarely witnessing a DJ who always kept the vibes soaring and the playlist fresh. “I never realised how good a remixer Axwell was until I saw him live,” said Kam Li Mei, a designer and regular clubber. “He was just utterly amazing. I was in awe.” But the night wasn’t yet over and there was more where that came from. 3am was nearing and fans waited to see what Axwell would generate for the finale. He didn’t disappoint, putting commercial steel into the mix with The Chemical Brothers’ ‘Hey Boy Hey Girl’ coupled with that essential dance floor pounder, Steve Angello & Laidback Luke’s spin on Robin S’ ‘Show Me Love’. Then the recognisable violin from The Verve’s ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’ saturated the room, this time acting as the teaser to Daft Punk’s ‘One More Time’. By then the female groupies had long been up onstage dancing in support of the dashing DJ from Stockholm.

Five minutes to 3am and it was all over, with clubbers closely echoing the final track and chanting “one more, one more”. Axwell did give them one more, showing his adept skills with a mash-up of sorts as the lights went up and the encore track was played: Everything But The Girl’s ‘Missing’ interlocked with the familiar beat of Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’. It was certainly fun times.

If this was how Axwell commanded a roomful of hundreds, imagine the sea of thousands at his every beck and call at the big music fests like Global Gathering, Glastonbury and Creamfields. He’s world #14 now; watch out 2010, we predict a Top 10.
